Saint Januarius, or San Gennaro in Italian, the patron saint of Naples, was a bishop of the city in 305 A.D., whose bones and blood are preserved in the Naples’ Cathedral as relics. Believed to have been martyred during Diocletian persecution, the blood is the subject of a mysterious miracle that takes place thrice every year. Preserved in a glass ampoule which at this point has dried up, the blood suddenly becomes liquid again to the sound of the mourning wails of Januarius’ descendants. Witness the procession and the Liquefaction ceremony take place in the narrow streets of the historical centre.
