In 1798, jeweller and trader Shalom Cohen arrived in Kolkata, India, paving the way for a diaspora Jewish community in the city. Baghdadi Jewish people traveled the sea routes from Basrah, Iraq to Shanghai in China and settled in port cities along the way. Kolkata (then Calcutta) was one such centre for Jewish folks. Even though small in number, they contributed substantially to the growth of the city. Dwelling In Travelling defines the identity of a community that was welcomed and prospered in a country far away from the persecution they suffered across the Western world.
