The ancient city of Caesarea was rebuilt and enlarged by Herod the Great around 25 BCE and renamed for his patron, emperor Caesar Augustus. Today, Caesarea is home to the Archaeological Park of Caesarea – the site of sculptures, the Roman Theatre – which is still a venue for performances, The Reef Palace – remains of a palace with a pool from the Roman & Byzantine period, The Hippodrome - a U-shaped amphitheatre, The Crusader gate – a fortification built by Louis IX & the Roman Aqueduct of Caesarea. Beautiful beaches, cafes, historic buildings & galleries displaying Israeli art co-exist alongside.
