Inspired by a foreign NGO worker, the fishermen of Bureh Town, Sierra Leone, started a surf club with just two surfboards. The country’s only such club, it has survived the Ebola outbreak, which reduced the number of surfing tourists, because of the passion of the surfers. Even with their meager resources, their love for the sport keeps them happy. Their persistence even leads to a visit to a surf club in neighboring Liberia, one that shares the goal of popularizing surfing in West Africa. A story of determination, this feature reinforces the power of passion in sparking joy even in difficult times.
